How it Works for Indiana Programs
Application for Inclusion on the Indiana Department of Education’s List of Approved STEM Education Programs Background and Benefits to Programs
In its State Strategic Plan for STEM, the Indiana STEM Advisory Council established priorities and goals to ensure that all of Indiana’s students have access and opportunities to gain a high-quality STEM education. One of the key strategies recommended in the plan is to scale evidence-based STEM curriculum in classrooms. To accomplish this strategy, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), Office of Teaching and Learning, has partnered with STEMworks at WestEd for the purpose of developing an Indiana-specific rubric to evaluate and identify evidence-based STEM curriculum. STEMworks has developed a set of research and experience-based design principles for effective STEM programs and a rigorous independent evaluation process to provide guidance for measuring the quality of STEM programs.
IDOE seeks applications from STEM education programs that meet STEMworks’ criteria for “accomplished” programs. Selected programs will be included in the STEMworks database and the IDOE’s list of evidence-based STEM curriculum. This is not an application for funding. However, school districts in Indiana may apply for future IDOE STEM grant opportunities to fund STEM programs on the evidence-based list.

Already listed in the STEMworks database and submitting for the IDOE approved STEM education programs list?
Programs already listed in the STEMworks database need only submit their responses to the IDOE supplemental questions. There are no changes to the questions from spring 2020. Programs that were accepted to the IDOE approved STEM education programs in spring 2020 do NOT need to reapply.
The Application Process
After completing the steps for the STEMworks application, programs complete the IDOE supplemental questions to determine their inclusion on the IDOE approved STEM education programs list.
